1.What expectations does each of these generational groups have about life and about organisations?
Each generation has its own distinct set of values that is developed from the social environment in their early years. Different generations have different values and beliefs regarding family, career, the work/life balance, training and development, loyalty, gender roles, the work environment and expectations of leaders. Demographers have named the different generations around today as Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y.
- Baby boomers and generation X: these two genearations where born between 1946-1979.the civil rights are very significant to these generations and they have a number of characteristics as follows.
- open-minded and rebellious but became more conservative in their 30’s and 40's.
- job status and social stand is very important to this generation.
- optimistic, ambitious, and loyal, and believe that employment is for life.
- They are a well-educated generation with many having tertiary qualifications and are resourceful, individualistic, self reliant and sceptical of authority.
- They sort of have a “what’s in it for me” attitude.
- Generation Y: this generation was born between 1980 and 1995 and are also known as the Millennium or Net Generation.they are very technologically wise and are comfortable with ethically diverse groups.
- optimistic, confident, sociable, and have strong morals and a sense of civic duty.Gen Y are not brand loyal and the speed of the Internet has led the Net Generation to be flexible and changing in its fashion, style consciousness and where and how it is communicated with. They expect great workplace flexibility and are likely to change employers even more frequently than Gen X’s.
generation Y finds 'short and precise' ways of communication the easier and more convenient ways of communicate.
2. what messages and experiences have contributed to those expectations?
*Baby boomer's- they have been driven to work harder within there own limited means and are also very conservative.
* Generation X- resourceful, individualistic, self reliant and sceptical of authority.
*Generation Y- they have fully depend on the internet and don't know life without phones and other technology gadgets.big dreamers want to work less and earn more.
3.Over what issues the three groups likely to have conflicts?why?
* individualism
*fast and high technology
*Age.
I think there are many more unknown conflicts likely to rise with time,the older generations(baby boomer's and generation X) are less social than the generation Y.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS.
1.To which,if any of the three generational groups do you belong?
* generation Y.
2.How do your expectations and experiences correspond to theirs?
* open minded
* direct and positive thinkers.
*flexibility and sociable.
* image/physical consciousness.
* diverse communities.
3. Over what issues are you likely to have conflict with the members of the three groups? Why?
* communication skills - personally,i would prefer to text what i have to say to some one and at professional level a formal email would be appropriate and more convenient.compared to the other generations (baby boomer's and generation X) the work ethic term is shared in terms of the end results but it is not the same time and amount of work put in to get great results.
4.Are the strategies chosen by generation X appropriate to the situations they face? generation Yers?
They are not really appropriate because they are getting to try to communicate with different people from either older or younger generations.the generation X has learned to live and work harder within there means where as for the generation Y life is more hands on and it is more of the internet error with the more 'clicking' than 'thinking.'
5.What effects are their straties likely to have on their relationships with their supervisors in traditional firms?with their co-workers?with there subordinates?why?
*mis communication due to different vocabulary.
* lack of most technology skills due to the constant change and update with the technology and the gadgets.
In a nutshell,some truth in some organisations,the baby boomer's and the generation X are often the ones in charge or have power such as;CEO positions and also other senior positions.
where as for the younger generation Y is more on the hands on work and also place in the technology sections hence the provide better communication skills.
