- Ineffective communication - knowlton who was the head of the photon project he was running, faced miss communication with his boss Jerrold and new group member fester. as a group/head member leading a certain project, there must be ethical values that should be followed when working side by side with people.the fact that knowlton's boss jerry did not call for an introduction meeting over the new member, that pushed knowlton further and he felt cheated out of place considering that he was in a more Superior position when it came to group and project additions in his company.
knowlton was also never straight forward with his boss jerry about the new addition to the project(fester) but later tried to open up with his other group mates about fester's impact to the group because he always was against meetings which in someway slowly led to insufficient communication as a leader and also as an employee to his boss Jerrold.
- jealously and inferiority complex - being the head of the group, knowlton was always sure of the collective decisions he made as a group that he conducted.he was in charge of setting and calling for all the meetings and had the Superior power.introducing a new character (fester)to the group especially a character that was very hard working and overly confident (genius) made knowlton jealous. fester became the talk of the office and almost Jerrold's best 'golden baby'
- Lack of team strength and false judgments. - knowlton's group was not that strengthen and it was slowly also threatened when fester came in.fester being a very strong character and a genius at that,it made the group feel incompetent and knowlton to.fester was an individual who could work on his own and knowlton did not understand this, which led him to think that fester was aiming to take credit for all the work that was being done.
2. Consider the personalities involved, especially those of Knowlton and Fester, and the organizational characteristics.
*Bob Knowlton.
- he was a very responsible man but he had a low core self evaluation because he needed regular doses of affirmation from Jerrold and would always communicate agreeably, even when he was feeling disagreeable.
*Fester.
- he was a brilliant and self serving scientist. he always approached a problem with a solution immediately and was always on to the next move.during the group meetings,he always presented ideas that were to complex for knowlton to present.
And the organisational characters, they clearly saw the difference in the workplace as time went on in the six months since hiring fester. on Jerrold's side,i think it was slightly wrong for him to not have considered knowlton's personality and communicated his intentions of hiring fester from the beginning.
3. Imagine yourself in the position of Dr. Jerrold at the end of the case, reflecting back over the events. Is there anything you could have done, on the basis of what you knew or could have known at the time, that would have led to a more favorable outcome? State your reasoning.
If i was in Dr.Jerrold's shoes, and reflection back over the events,i would first consider and look into all group personalties and the head bob knowlton, then go ahead to give a notice in advance introducing a new member to the group.or rather have a personal meeting with bob knowlton introducing a very brilliant person to the project and live it to him to welcome and introduce (fester) to the other group members.
In that way,the communication from the beginning to Knowlton on hiring fester would have created a whole new story from the beginning.
